Day 1: Focus on Family Success
Morning Workshop: Honouring Our Strength with Dyan Eybergen
“It is not about ignoring that which is bad but celebrating the beauty that still exists despite the circumstances”. Honouring Our Strength is an immersive workshop in celebration that honours the courage and tenacity of AHVNA members through the acknowledgment and acceptance of the challenges faced over the last few years. This workshop will bring opportunities to stop and reflect on the strength of our workers, families and communities and celebrate our collective achievements.
Dyan Eybergen, RN, is a certified Parent Coach, Behavioural Health Consultant and an award-winning author of Out of the Mouths of Babes: Parenting from a Child’s Perspective. Dyan is a respected professional speaker on issues supporting family and individual mental fitness. Dyan is the parenting columnist for CBC Edmonton Radio Active and has also appeared regularly on Edmonton’s CTV Morning Live show as a parenting consultant.
Afternoon Workshop: Supporting Families Impacted by FASD
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, FASD, is a whole body, brain based, lifelong disability that affects over 4 % of the Canadian population. FASD is caused by exposure to alcohol prenatally and is diagnosed by a multi-disciplinary team. Due to the complex nature of the disability and associated behaviour challenges, many individuals who are impacted become involved with children’s services, have been adopted or their families have utilized a Home Visitation program. It is important that people in helping professions have up to date foundational knowledge of FASD, as those who are less FASD informed will be less successful in supporting these individuals and their families.
Angela Kemble has been the Executive Director of the Northwest Central FASD Network since 2015. She is also the WRaP 2.0 FASD Instructional Coach providing FASD professional development and instructional coaching to education administration from Feb 1, 2021 to Jan 31, 2026. Angela has a Masters in Business, a Human and Social Development Degree, a Child and Youth Care Diploma and a Social Service Worker Certificate. Trained in Motivational Interviewing, Edu-Grief Therapy and annual Cultural Sensitivity she is a presenter at conferences and provides FASD education and training to professionals, support workers, families and communities. A big believer in collaboration she has facilitated active partnerships with many organizations from all levels in the network region, Edmonton, Calgary, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and across Alberta. Angela lives in St Albert with her husband, two daughters, two dogs, two cats, two birds and two fish.
Velvet Buhler has worked at Healthy Families Healthy Futures since 2016. During this time, she supported families and individuals as a Home Visitor, FASD and PCAP Mentor before moving to Program Manager. Velvet currently sits on the PCAP Board of Directors and is part of the Father Involvement Initiative group. Velvet operated a day home for 5 years while living and working on a mixed farming operation in Ellerslie. This enabled her to stay home with her children prior to their school years. After the children were all in school, Velvet worked and volunteered in different capacities, mostly in the healthcare and higher needs communities before starting work at Healthy Families Healthy Futures. Velvet and her husband now reside in the Athabasca area enjoying the outdoors and time with grandchildren.
