From 2002 to 2020 the Calgary Healthy Families Collaborative (CHFC) supported at risk families. In 2007, CHFC, in response to an identified need for a reliable and valid home visitation screening tool, undertook an initiative to develop a standardized easy to administer postpartum screening tool. Over the next 18 months, the CHFC, in the context of an organizational research framework developed the Calgary Postpartum Screen. The reliability of the screening tool was tested extensively using test-retest and inter-rater-reliability methods. Its face validity and content validity were established through an in-depth literature review and based on feedback from home visitation professionals.
The screening tool demonstrated high sensitivity when the screening results were compared with the findings of in-depth home assessments for mothers who had been identified as being at risk. Since 2007, the CHFC and other organizations have successfully used the screening tool.
The Calgary Healthy Families Screening Tool is reliable and valid- it may be used for assessment. There will be an opportunity to ask questions as well.
